Stronger Practice Hubs... Here to stay!

I'm Helen Rush, Lead for our Stronger Practice Hub, and I wanted to share some exciting news: the SPH programme has been extended! The Best Start for Life document is full of  inspiring opportunities for the Early Years sector, children, and families. This blog just highlights some of the areas that relate directly to us at the SPH.

What happens when early years professionals come together to share what really works?

Since their launch in November 2022, the Stronger Practice Hubs (SPHs) have been all about connection, collaboration, and evidence-informed improvement in the Early Years. The Hubs have provided the space for us to come together to share stories, guidance and issues we are facing in our work. Although there have been so many positives to having Hubs, these have been met with lots of uncertainty about the future. But despite the positive impact, there have also been challenges, particularly around uncertainty about long-term funding.

Last week might just be the turning point. The new "Best Start for Life" strategy, published in July 2025, stated a commitment to double the amount of Hubs across England as well as an extra three years of funding. Our work matters and the Government are ensuring we know that.

From a Slow Start to Meaningful Change:

Currently, there are 18 Hubs across England, two in every region - these networks offer practical, evidence-based support to people working in the early years sector. We at St Edmund's Early Years Stronger Practice Hub, have had a journey the past three years. We have solidified what works best within our network.

  • Delivering evidence-based programmes

  • Creating peer networks across local and regional boundaries

  • Hosting conferences with inspiring speakers and interactive sessions

  • Sharing learning through newsletters, blogs, and social media

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, from practitioners who feel more confident, connected, and equipped to support the children in their care.

“The network was thought provoking”

“Great to link up with other professionals and share ideas.”

“Lots of fresh ideas to support children's learning.”

“So much increased knowledge and awareness.”

Collaboration at the Heart of What We Do

We’re proud of our local partnerships, each bringing different and valuable perspectives:

  • Alex, a childminder from Leeds, brings expertise, advocacy and a genuine passion for raising the profile of childminding.

  • Grassroots Nursery, a vibrant PVI setting in Calderdale, shares their practice through visits, blogs, and webinar contributions- helping others see and feel what ‘quality’ looks like in action.

  • Delius Specialist Education School opens its doors to share strategies that support children with SEND- practical, real-world insights that cross over to mainstream settings too.

  • Dixons Allerton Academy is a truly inspiring environment, shaped by a child-centred, exploratory approach influenced by Reggio Emilia. It’s a setting that reminds us what’s possible with the right values, passion and team.

These partnerships aren’t just about showcasing good practice - they’re about learning together and building a shared future for Early Years.

Looking Ahead

Stronger Practice Hubs are growing - in numbers, in reach, and in ambition. And we want you to be part of it.

Whether you’re an experienced practitioner, a setting leader, or just starting out, this is your chance to connect with others, explore new ideas, and help shape the future of Early Years in West and South Yorkshire.

Let’s keep learning together.
