Name: Shabana Khan

Current Position: Deputy Head teacher

Current School: Lapage Primary School Bradford

My experience is rooted in year 6. After qualifying in 2000, I secured a year 6 post as class teacher and became a humanities co-ordinator in 2005.

I became an Assistant Head teacher in 2008, at a time when Lapage Primary school was causing considerable concern to the local authority. When I applied, it was recognised that my practice in the year 6 classroom needed to be disseminated across the year 6 team. The Key stage 2 results have since been on an upward trajectory.

I have delivered best practice training, with the local authority around the delivery of Grammar, spelling and punctuation, after a successful moderation in 2012.

Since securing the post of Deputy Head teacher in 2013, I have led the teaching and learning across the school, with a specific focus on Key Stage 2. I have had many successes, including excellent Key stage 2 results, which are consistently above the national average and progress which is in the top 1% of the country - putting Lapage on the map through the teaching of English and Maths. We received a letter from the MP David Laws, singling Lapage out as being among the ‘nation’s top performers in reading, writing and maths.’

Leading Maths at Lapage has allowed me to construct a unique way of teaching maths – it is embedded and there is depth. As a result, Lapage was part of a study of successful practice in Bradford schools – part of the BPIP. Consequently, I have been supporting schools in Bradford who are ‘RI’ in their teaching and learning of maths. I am often ‘commissioned’ to deliver training at other schools throughout Bradford.

I have completed a 5 day ILM coaching course and have begun coaching sessions with staff at Lapage.I am the NQT Induction tutor for Lapage, as a result, we have a team of strong teachers, as well as a being the school based trainer/mentor for trainee teachers. Recently I have been recruited as a Tutor as part of the SCITT.
