EYLL

EARLY YEARS LITERACY AND LANGUAGE PROGRAMME

The Early Years Literacy and Language Programme has been running for just under a year and was aimed at improving the GLD levels achieved at the end of reception year in Bradford schools. This issue was particularly pertinent in schools situated in some our most deprived neighbourhoods where the trend of boys performing significantly lower than girls added to a growing gender gap. As a result of these 3 strands we have already seen the following impact:

  • 8 schools GLD 9% average increase - more than double the LA gain
  • Boys GLD increased by 12%,
  • Gap between boys and girls decreased by 18%, gap narrowed in all schools

Bradford Birth to 19 Teaching School have worked in partnership with the local council, the National Literacy Trust and the Innovation Centre to develop a bespoke package which comprises of 3 strands:

1. Writing project

2. Sharing stories project

3. FRED - Fathers Read Every Day

These three strands will be combined to look at how to improve outcomes for boys at the end of EYFS. System Leaders (Specialist Leaders in Education) were deployed to support this project and we also used St Edmund's Nursery School and Children Centre as a National Support School to facilitate this work.
